Dance Around the World: A Window into Culture and History

Perhaps the world’s oldest form of art, the sequences of human motion that make up dance predate the arrival of written language. Many historians believe that the development of social, celebratory and ritual dances are the essential factors for the emergence of early human civilizations.

This highly interactive summit takes students through the theory and practice of a variety of dance styles while also elucidating the cultural heritage and historical context that surrounds them. For each dance, we investigate its historical roots, hearing from expert instructors, and engage in a discussion about appropriation versus appreciation in the increasingly complex modern dance world.

Global Experiences for Every Student

Global education has always been about what you do, not where you go. The essential and enduring work includes teaching students to appreciate diverse perspectives, understand the connections they have to the wider world, respectively and effectively communicate and collaborate across cultures and countries, and use interdisciplinary knowledge to investigate and take action on issues that matter to them and the wider world.

Feature 1

We believe in the power of learning first-hand from other people‘s experiences and being able to illustrate the concepts we cover in all of our programs with examples of people whose daily work revolves around the issues of global significance. Envoys’ network of wonks, historians, scholars, and practitioners provides access for students to real people who care deeply about improving the world around them.

Feature 2

Both the present and the future require the ability to navigate ambiguity and solve problems together. Students and educators alike must seize the moment to develop meaningful connections and bridge differences. Throughout the summit series, we utilize virtual exchanges and project collaborations to develop empathy, understanding, and respect.

Feature 3

The work that matters in the 21st century will be performed by small teams utilizing diverse skill sets and technologies to work across geographic, cultural, and temporal boundaries. Each summit culminates with a collaborative ‘pay-it-forward’ project that helps students to bring learning back to campus and home communities and inspire personal, sustained engagement.
