A New Story

Mexico II

Mexico boasts fascinating contributions to art, music, and cuisine but there are other complex social dynamics at play in the country that merit a closer look, especially by students and teachers who share a border with the country and will, increasingly, interact with each other. This program aims to appreciate the cultural vibrancy of the country, comprehend the pressing issues faced by its people, and to ground our own understanding of Mexico.

“Agave landscapes weave tales of ancient Aztec civilizations and vibrant modern culture.“

-

“Vibrant colors of mariachi melodies blend with the rich tapestry of ancient civilizations.“

-

Impact Statement Everywhere we go, we carry a promise – to engage with respect, act with purpose, and leave a positive imprint. As envoys of our journey is more than travel; Our footprint is light, but our impact is profound, creating bridges of cooperation and mutual growth across the globe.

Students depart for their international flights and are warmly greeted by Envoys educators upon arrival. After a safety briefing and team-building, the group explores the surrounding area and enjoys a welcome dinner, experiencing the first taste of Mexican cuisine.

Day 2

Students begin their learning journey at Zócalo, Mexico City's central square and visit the Templo Mayor, delving into the city's layered history. After lunch in a cantina we visit El Palacio de Bellas Artes and end the day with an Envoy-led activity at the hotel.

Day 3

Students visit the Chapultepec Forest and the Museo Nacional de Antropología, delving into Mexico's pre-Columbian heritage. After lunch, they meet Rusta Civica, promoting sustainable urban development, visit the Frida Kahlo Museum and end the day with dinner in Coyoacan.

Students engage in moving conversations with Casa Refugiados, an organization that promotes migrant rights. They later visit Mercado de la Merced for lunch and walk back through the Zócalo to the human rights Museum of Memory and Tolerance. The day ends with an important debrief and dinner.

Day 5

We travel to Xochimilco where we ride the iconic Trajinera boats on the system of canals and waterways, remnants of the Aztec water transport. Afterwards we fly to Guadalajara, one of Mexico’s most important cultural centers. After dinner, the students explore the city and play games at the hotel.

Day 6

On the first day in Guadalajara, the group explores the historic center, interviews locals, and tours Hospicio Cabañas, known for unique artworks. They visit Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village for regional dishes. After downtime, they may attend a performance at Teatro Degollado in the evening

Day 7

Students meet the Rhizome Center for Migrants, a legal aid clinic in Guadalajara, offering post-deportation legal services. After a debrief at Parque Agua Azul, we explore the Museo Regional de la Cerámica and end the day with dinner accompanied by Mariachi musicians.

Day 8

We embark on a special day with a one-hour bus ride to Lake Chapala, Mexico's largest lake. A scenic boat ride offers stunning views of Jalisco landscapes. We have Lunch in Ajijic, a "pueblo magico," and return to Guadalajara, where we unwind at the hotel before dinner.

Day 9

On the final day, we explore the largest indoor market for souvenirs and visit the Basilica de Zapopan appreciating its architecture. After lunch by the Basilica, we stroll through Avenida Chapultepec filled with shops and music, and conclude the program with a celebratory dinner.

Day 10

We wake up and pack our bags. After eating breakfast and completing our program evaluations, we board our bus to the Johannesburg airport for our return flights home.
